Mexico

Introduction

Mexico is country filled with so many cultures, diverse selection of foods, and different styles of music. Mexico City during Dia De Los Muertos is my favorite time of year to go. Cozumel and Playa del Carmen are best to go outside of hurricane season.

Where To Stay

Mexico City– Central Historico will have the main square, Zocalo. There are many restaurants, the grand Cathedral, and Templo Mayor. West area is where Angel de la Independencia  is located, many hipster areas, Zona Rosa the gay friendly area.

Cozumel– In Cozumel, I stayed at the Westin Cozumel.

Playa Del Carmen- In Playa del Carmen, there is Xcaret that with the price, includes all the parks. There are many hotels that are along the coast.

Transportation

Mexico City- In Mexico City, the public transportation and uber was the best option.

Cozumel-Uber was available, but the hotel had their own taxis that they provided. You can also rent a car for $30-60 a day (depending on what type of vehicle you want)

Things To Do

Mexico City– During Dia De Los Muertos, there are all kinds of parades and celebrations going on. Also, a must, is a trip to the pyramids.  The Teotihuacan pyramids are located about a hour from Mexico City. I did the bus and we got it at Autobuses del Norte metro station. Once at the station, go to Puerta 8 and buy a ticket. A trip to the Museum of Anthropology had so much to see. I recommend it if you want to learn more about the history and culture. The Zocolo, or main square, is where you can visit the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral. In the same area, you can see Templo Mayor, which was the main temple of the Mexica people.

Cozumel– If you rented a car or on a tour, go to the east side of the island and see the beauty of the beaches there. The restaurant, Coconuts, had great drinks and food and was right on the beach. If you love snorkeling, El Cielo and el cielito are the best ones that I did. We saw all kinds of fish and huge starfish. There were even stingrays swimming around. The main plaza has a show at  night with dancers and music.  On the south side of the island, you can go to Parque Punta Sur and relax on the beach and have some drinks while swimming in the ocean. There is also a light house that we were able to go to the top. There is also a lagoon tour that you can see alligators.

Playa Del Carmen and Chitzen Itza- A round trip ferry ticket from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen is about $25 and takes about 45 minutes. The trip allows you to go to the mainland and venture to cenotes (a natural sinkhole that has freshwater), visit the pyramids of Chichen Itza, the ruins of Tulum, or my favorite Xcaret. Chichen Itza’s pyramids are beautiful. The ruins that surround it, show how Mayans lived back in their days. The tours to there can be combined with a cenote and lunch. I would choose that option because the pyramids can be sweltering. The same with the ruins at Tulum, a cenote is recommended to go with it. There are also ferries that take you to Isla Mujeres that leave from Cancun.

Xcaret is an eco-waterpark located in the jungle of Riviera Maya. It is about 15 min. from Playa del Carmen and can be reached with uber or taxi. The park has 3 rivers you can float, dolphins to swim with, a combination of scuba diving and snorkeling called snuba, and activities for the kids. There are also animals scattered around the park. So, you get a zoo and waterpark in one package. At the end of the night, the Xcaret México Espectacular shows the history of the country, the dances of some of the states, how Pok-a-Dot is played. It was an ancient ball game that is similar to soccer and basketball. There are other parks that range from xenotes excursions to zip lining for the more adventurous.
