Presenter and author Kate Garraway reveals all about her holidays

She also hosts a weekday show on Smooth Radio and has written her first book, The Joy Of Big Knickers. She lives in London with her husband Derek Draper and their children, Darcey, 11, and eight-year-old Billy.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE HOLIDAY?

My honeymoon in the Seychelles was special in so many ways. We stayed on the glamorous island of Sainte Anne and did lots of snorkelling in beautiful water.

I’d just found out I was pregnant which was wonderful as most honeymooners are paranoid about holding their tummy in – I could just let it all go!

The only shame was not being able to indulge in the local fresh lobster and langoustines.

AND YOUR WORST?

In 2000 I went on a girls’ holiday to Dubai and my luggage was lost. It was a nightmare. I’d packed the perfect wardrobe with my best outfits and heels.

I made the best of things though and had fun buying new dresses in the markets.

My luggage turned up on the last day and I then had too much stuff to take home – I had to buy another case.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SOUVENIR?

An Egyptian necklace with a bright green scarab beetle on it. We took Darcey to Egypt when she was a baby and her bright red hair was a source of fascination for the locals.

Many had never seen it before and would literally stop us on the street, wanting photographs.

One woman said red hair brought luck and gave Darcey the necklace. which I’ve kept as a memory of the extraordinary holiday.

I felt I was pushing a mini god in a buggy.

BEST HOLIDAY READ?

I’m just back from Lanzarote where I read a cracker, The Story Of Our Lives, by Helen Warner.

It’s about four old friends who meet up one weekend every year and someone’s always having a crisis.

I do the same with my girlfriends and find those breaks restorative.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME?

If it’s with the children it’s all about pulling on wetsuits and jumping in

the water in Cornwall or the Lake District. I love all that.

If it’s Derek and me we like to sleep, basically – lying in and having naps by a pool, and not being on a schedule.

WHERE WOULD YOU REVISIT?

Cairo, where Derek proposed to me. He was planning to do it at the pyramids but the day before he booked us a jacuzzi at the hotel, complete with lotus flowers and candles which was so romantic he decided to do it then.

He went down on one knee so the water came up to his neck, which was quite amusing.

We went to see the pyramids the next day. I’d love to take the children there.

WHERE NEXT?

The Garraway clan – 28 or so of us – always go to Cornwall for May bank holiday. Before then we’re thinking of going skiing in Bulgaria.

The children have never skied and I did it 25 years ago but I want to take them before they get too old and scared.

I’ve booked us a family learn-to-ski session at the Milton Keynes Snozone in a few weeks to see how we get on.

Kate’s book, The Joy Of Big Knickers is out now (Blink Publishing).
