Japan has many Izu islands south of Tokyo, forming two towns and six villages.
One of the islands hides a terrifying secret, due to its location near a volcano.
Called Miyake-jima Island, the locals who choose to live there have to carry an item around with them at all times.
Without them, they could be putting their health at risk.

Those who live in Miyake-jima must always carry a gas mask with them at all times on the island
Despite being just an hour from Tokyo, those who live in Miyake-jima must always carry a gas mask with them at all times on the island.
This is due to the sulphur dioxide levels on the island which could increase, therefore causing them to have to wear them in an emergency.
Mount Oyama erupted in the year 2000, forcing 42,000 tons of sulphur dioxide to contaminate the island per day, which forced locals to be evacuated.
They only began to return to the island in 2005 after levels were deemed safe enough.

For tourists looking to go to the island, a third of Miyake-jima is still off limits.
They are also warned to take a gas mask with them or purchase one upon arrival, as well as check they are in good respiratory health before visiting.
With the island now having a population of 2,775 residents, the life on the island is back to normal.
It isn’t the only island with a bizarre background.

An island in northern Australia is thought to contain black magic.
Within the 274 islands of the Torres Strait, many islanders believe that people have been cursed whilst visiting.
A hotel worker told the Daily Star: “It’s openly believed that black magic exists.
“I know when people got sick they sometimes believed it was due to black magic.”
